This is the historic Biltmore Hotel, Los Angeles, the location of the Annual ICTA Convention which will be held from Sunday, July 23, and concluding the evening of Wednesday, July 26 with the final evening’s President’s Banquet.

The beaux-arts hotel has impressed guests and locals since the glory days of Old Hollywood, capable of entertaining a galaxy of stars, dignitaries, and presidents from around the world. The Biltmore has played host to a golden era prohibition nightclub, numerous Academy Award ceremonies, and feature film sets throughout the years.

Certainly, a fitting location for the annual meet. With memorable hotspots nearby, including Disney and Universal Studios, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Melrose Avenue, the Santa Monica Pier, and so many more wonderful points of interest.

EGG Show at Regal LA Live

Presented by Ioan Allen, SVP Cinema-Industry Relations, Dolby Laboratories

Ioan Allen’s The Egg Show introduces various aspects of film sound design and mixing technique. Multiple film examples are used, each of which has been chosen to demonstrate a different mixing issue. You will see how film sound mixers highlight a conversation in a crowd scene, inter-cut music to film and create artificial sound effects that sound more real on film than a “live” recording. Numerous slides enhance the lecture, most of which use photographs of eggs to illustrate the artistic uses of sound on film. This non-technical lecture has been given many times throughout the world at film conventions and festivals, film schools, and to technical societies.

Gary Rydstrom, winner of seven Oscars for sound design and mixing for films including Jurassic Park, Titanic and Saving Private Ryan, says:

“Ioan Allen’s ‘Egg Show’ is the most unexpected, yet revelatory lecture on film sound. It uses unique visuals, not to mention props, to illustrate sound concepts. Like eggs themselves, it is both fun and good for you.”

Ioan Allen is an SVP at Dolby Laboratories. He has received five Academy Awards, including an Oscar® — the Progress medal from the SMPTE, the Silver Medal from the AES, and earlier this year he received an Icon Award from the ICTA

Compression Drivers: A Fundamental Part of Film Sound

Presented by Tom Holman, Tom Holman Labs

Compression drivers were fundamental to film sound since their introduction in 1926, and remained largely unchanged in form from until about 1976, and are still an important part of installations. In all that time, the basics were a metal dome, edge-driven by a voice coil close to a phasing plug that steered sound waves into an exit throat. The Western Electric 555 was first, and you can now find them on eBay for $12,000. For fifty years changes to their design were in materials and details of their construction. One thread in development over that time was to use ever lighter and stiffer diaphragms going from aluminum to titanium to beryllium. But 4” diameter diaphragms exiting into a 2” throat to which they evolved are still challenged to stay a piston out to the top octave.

Newer designs include two-way drivers with two annular rings, each center driven, one lighter and smaller for higher frequencies, and one larger for lower frequencies, exiting into a common throat. Another uses a single large titanium diaphragm, center driven, and with a very complex diaphragm shape called axiperiodic meant to harness break up modes.

Five driver variations have been tested on one well-known constant-directivity horn. Results will be shown. The problems of ordinary three-way designs will be described, and how the new developments allow for one mid- to high-frequency horn driven by a modern compression driver to overcome these problems. Modern DSP now available with much more sophistication than 33 years ago can also be brought to bear.
